You’ve probably noticed this…

When something hits you emotionally, your thinking disappears.

You feel it.

You react to it.

But you don’t process it clearly.

That’s because your amygdala (your threat/emotion centre) has taken over…

and your prefrontal cortex (your thinking, decision-making brain) has stepped back.

So in that moment, trying to “think your way out of it” can feel impossible.

There are two ways to shift this

Most people only know one.

1. Naming the emotion

“This is anxiety.”

“This is frustration.”

“This is fear.”

This works because it activates the thinking brain…

which then calms the emotional brain.

It’s a top-down approach.

But there’s a second way (and it’s often faster)

You change your breathing.

Instead of trying to control the mind…

you regulate the body first.

And the most powerful version of this?

Alternate nostril breathing.

Why this works so quickly

Because it doesn’t rely on thinking.

It works through your physiology.

Within minutes, it:

• slows your breathing

• activates your vagus nerve

• reduces the stress response

• calms the amygdala

• allows your prefrontal cortex to come back online

So instead of forcing clarity…

you create the conditions for it.

What’s happening underneath

When you breathe slowly through your nose:

• your body produces nitric oxide

• blood vessels open

• oxygen delivery improves

• circulation increases (including to your face and brain)

When you extend your exhale:

• your nervous system shifts into repair mode

• inflammation reduces

• your body moves out of “survival” and into “healing”

And when you alternate nostrils:

• you rebalance both sides of the nervous system

• you stabilise brain activity

• you create rhythm and control

Why this matters more than you think

Because your body cannot heal, repair, or regenerate properly in a stress state.

That includes your skin.

Collagen production…

cellular repair…

even your natural glow…

all depend on being in the right state.

A simple reset you can use today

Try this for 3 minutes:

• close your right nostril → inhale through the left

• switch → exhale through the right

• inhale through the right

• switch → exhale through the left

Keep it slow.

Let your exhale be longer than your inhale.

That’s it.

What you’ll notice

• your body softens

• your mind clears

• the intensity drops

And often…

your face looks different.

More colour.

Less tension.

More life.

Here’s the shift

You don’t need to fight your emotions.

You don’t need to force positive thinking.

You simply need to change the state your body is in.

Because when you:

• improve circulation

• increase oxygen

• calm the nervous system

Your body does what it’s designed to do.

It regulates.

It repairs.

It restores.

The most powerful combination

Next time you feel overwhelmed:

1. Start the breathing

2. Then quietly name the feeling

Now you’ve worked from both directions:

• body → brain

• brain → body

That’s where real control comes from.

You already have the tool.

You’re using it every second of the day.

Now you know how to use it properly.
