“Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”
Mark 5:34
When do you think healing begins?
Most people would say it starts with the treatment.
After nearly three decades of working with people in pain, I’ve come to a different conclusion.
I’ve often noticed that something changes the moment a person books an appointment.
Not after I’ve examined them.
Not after I’ve treated them.
The moment they decide, “I’m going to do something about this.”
Their pain may still be present.
Their diagnosis hasn’t changed.
Yet many arrive saying, “I already feel better knowing I’m coming to see you.”
What changed?
Often, it’s hope.
The burden of carrying the problem alone begins to lift. They no longer feel stuck. They have a plan, a direction, and a renewed sense that change is possible.
Modern research suggests that our expectations, beliefs, and emotions can influence how we experience pain, stress and recovery.
Hope can calm the body’s stress response, shape behaviour and improve engagement with treatment. That doesn’t mean hope cures every illness, but it does remind us that healing is more than a physical process.
When Jesus said to the woman who had suffered for twelve years, “Your faith has made you well,” He recognised something profound.
Her healing story didn’t begin at the moment He spoke those words. It began when she believed there was hope and took the courageous step towards Him.
Every healing journey begins with a decision.
A decision to stop accepting that this is simply how life will always be.
A decision to seek wisdom.
A decision to ask for help.
A decision to believe tomorrow can be different from today.
Whether your next step is speaking to a trusted friend, visiting a healthcare professional, praying, resting, forgiving, or simply choosing not to give up, don’t underestimate its significance.
Sometimes the first act of healing isn’t the treatment.
It’s the decision to begin.
Reflection
Is there an area of your life where you’ve been waiting for change when what you really need is to take the first step?
Perhaps today is the day your healing journey begins.
