What is one of the fastest ways to put your brain in trouble?

Interrupt its supply of oxygenated blood.

Think about a stroke. Blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, depriving brain tissue of the oxygen and nutrients it needs.

Now think about sleep apnoea.

Throughout the night, breathing repeatedly stops or reduces. Oxygen levels can fall, sleep becomes fragmented, and sleep apnoea is associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

There is a message here that I don’t think we talk about enough:

Your brain needs oxygen, but oxygen also needs to get there.

That means breathing, blood flow and circulation matter to brain health.

And this brings me to something incredibly simple.

HUM.

Yes, hum.

For five minutes.

I’ve been doing my 5-Minute Hum everywhere.

I’ve hummed in my car.

I’ve even hummed sitting on the toilet.

Why?

Because brain care doesn’t have to be complicated, and if a habit requires the perfect environment, we’re far less likely to do it.

What happens when you hum?

Humming dramatically increases nitric oxide in the nasal passages compared with simply breathing out.

Nitric oxide is an important signalling molecule involved in blood-vessel function and regulation of blood flow.

Humming also naturally gives you a longer, controlled exhalation.

And then there is the vibration.

Put your lips together and hum now:

Hmmmmmmmmmm…

Feel it.

Through your nose. Your face. Your throat. Your head. Your chest.

This is one reason humming fascinates me after 30 years of working hands-on with people’s heads, bodies, and nervous systems.

Something so simple creates an immediate physical experience throughout the body.

What about after a stroke?

A stroke is an emergency. The first priority is urgent hospital treatment, every minute matters.

But what happens afterwards matters too.

Once someone is medically stable and under the appropriate medical and rehabilitation teams, the focus turns towards recovery.

This is where my hands-on work may form part of someone’s wider recovery programme.

I work with the individual rather than simply the diagnosis, assessing the patterns of tension, restriction, and dysfunction I find throughout the head and body and working gently with those areas.

My aim is to create the best possible environment for that person’s recovery alongside their medical care and rehabilitation.

I never want somebody to think:

“I’ve had a stroke. This is as good as I’m ever going to get.”

Recovery can continue long after the initial event, and the brain has an extraordinary capacity to adapt through neuroplasticity.

If you or somebody you love is recovering from a stroke and would like to discuss whether my approach could complement their existing rehabilitation, you can contact me.

Five minutes. That’s it.

And for everyone else, don’t wait for something to go wrong before you start thinking about your brain.

Driving?

Hum.

Sitting on the toilet?

Hum.

Walking?

Hum.

Waiting for the kettle?

Hum.

Five minutes of intentional breathing and humming.

No equipment. No subscription. No appointment.

Come and hum with me

I’ve been documenting my own 5-Minute Hum - including the car and, yes, the toilet.

If seeing me humming in ridiculous places reminds you to do your five minutes, it’s done its job.

Five minutes. One hum. Every day.

Start treating brain care like brushing your teeth.
